For the last couple of years I have used several DIY backup solutions. If you are not tech savvy and want a quick solution, THIS is your NAS. If you want to save a bit dough and have a spare computer UNRAID would be good enough.

I put in two 6TB drives and plugged in. DONE! Super easy setup for my cameras.

I'd been using an old PC as a home server for years. When it became too old to function, I started evaluating alternatives and landed with this device. So far, it's been a fantastic replacement and a reliable, easy-to-use home server for file storage and media streaming. The interface is very easy to use -- while it's packed with software features that can get quite complex, the basics are ready to go right out of the box (and would probably be enough for the majority of home novice users). I loaded mine with two Seagate NAS drives, and so far so good. I especially appreciate that this device is so much more energy efficient than running a PC all day and night (there's already been a noticeable impact on my energy bills!).

Best private cloud server device i've ever used. When i travel and there's nothing to watch on TV i just stream it off of my own server. You can set it up so other family members can stream or download/upload any pictures or videos from their phone as well. Only drawback is you have to buy your own HDD but i rather do that than pay a monthly subscription.

I've put in several of these devices and none have ever failed to do their job. Easy access via Synology account allows you to monitor, make configuration changes, and even update/install software packages, as well as the DSM, without having to remote into another machine on the local network. With a number of configuration options (filetype, RAID version, etc.), there is a use in every environment, whether it be work or home; and the configuration wizard makes setup quick and easy.

Bought the wrong HDD's but took them back and bought the right ones. Setup was fairly easy but got some tech support from Synology, and they didn't laugh at me for being confused.
Played around to get comfortable, and now wonder why I've gone so long without one.

This is a must if u are into future technologies. Personally I use this for multiple purposes,i.e, surveillance cameras, seamless cloud storage of pictures, audio recordings, and data files from computer. Basically, this device has free apps to expand this NAS to fit your needs. For example, u can host your own website or DNS server on here. Just download the appropriate app they have available. The only catch to cameras are the licenses they use. This NAS comes with 2 camera streaming licenses. camera can have at least two streams.

I had and issue that I had caused and contacted amazon help on this product and they got me in touch with the Mfg tech support (this was on a Sunday). We worked together and they were very helpful and helped me resolve my issue and I am very pleased with the outcome. I had a previous Nas that was about 10 yrs old that died on me and it was slow doing my computer backups over my lan. This unit is much faster and it gives you the ability to expand the memory, for my application I probably will not use because the system doesn't show that it is using a large chunk of the onboard memory. Time will tell but so far after a few weeks of use I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Really like the User Interface with this Product...I had a WD Product prior to this and one of my beefs with WD was the poor user interface.

Everything you need is in one place and you can choose additional applications that can all live in the same interface deepending on your needs.

Hardware seems well built and easy to get drives in and out. Really like having two USB 3.0 slots in the rear of the box.

So far so good and has been working like a champ. Recommend.

Don't cheat and buy cheep disk drives! Buy the WD "Ironwolf" drives to ensure long term viability of the drives. Go on YouTube and look for "Mydoodads" tips on the setup. These are FANTASTIC videos. He might not use your specific model but one can easily figure out the differences. DO NOT jump ahead of his videos. Determine AFTER you get into each video what options you want as his whole approach is "building blocks". As a major size airline flight instructor, I use building block learning and I do not skip around!

I’ve resesrched a lot and viewed YouTube vids about many other NAS within the same price and spec. I purchased an alternate non Synology NAS that was junk so I returned it. I decided to spend a little bit more and got the Synology. But the hard part was either 218 or 218+. I watched a YouTube video comparing them both and they are 95% equal. It offers the same apps. The difference is the CPU and expandable RAM. I can’t see myself expanding the RAM greater than 2Gb for a NAS (since it is only for Home use). Although the 218+ is a touch faster and can’t justify paying the difference. I purchased 2 - 2TB HHD Seagate drives and plug and play was easy. Setup was easy also. Synology app doesn’t has Plex in the suite but that doesn’t mean it can’t be installed. You will need to go to the Plex site and choose the Synology Plex (there is 3 to choose from. One of them should allow you to install within the Synology GUI (desktop). This any apps Synology has you will run into security issues allow to share (read/write) permissions. This is very good. Even sharing photos was challenging to give permission to allow other clients to download pics. (This was also good). Photo sharing is my favourite part of this NAS. Synology with give you a copy of a link for you to forward it to you friends and share the pics. You can even allow a time frame for the link to be enabled.

First-time NAS implementor. It's very nice when you have a centralized location to store personal content safely and be able to access it on any device, from anywhere. It's also wonderful to know, in a RAID1 configuration, if one of the drives fails, the data is not lost. I purchased two 4TB Seagate IronWolf drives for this product and I'm really happy.

Synology's support site is good, with lots of helpful information. I recommend going there to see say, the differences between the DS218, DS218play, DS218j.

One thing that is tough to beat, and a real treat, if you need to chat with a NAS expert, no problem, they are there. You can also submit a ticket, right from within the control panel of the NAS.

Initial setup was very easy - perhaps too easy. I ended up with a redundancy configuration that works well for beginners (shr) when I really wanted RAID1. Before placing any data on the drive, a quick chat with support, and I learned what I would need to do to switch it to RAID1.

Then I inquired as to what would be required to map a drive letter from a Win10 client to the NAS. Chat saved the day.

I very much like the ease of downloading some Android Apps to use on my cell phone to access the NAS.

Functionality? A ton of it in a very small enclosure. Just days after getting it set up, I am wondering how I lived this long without a NAS in my home for my network....
